Abstract :
Images are to be used by the poet to convey his perception clearly to the reader. For giving the real meaning to the thoughts and ideas every poet employs imageries in his or her poems. A poet introduces a reader to a world of dream which he creates with the help of imageries and decorates with figurative language. They are not to be restricted to follow the rules. With the thought of making the picture alive they use the different images according to their themes. To present an interesting landscape of thoughts before the eyes of the reader they also mingle figurative language with imagery. Keen observation requires using figurative language which gives apt structure to the setting and theme and differentiates the poet from his contemporaries. By getting the meaning of imagery a reader can participate in the activity of the world which has been created by the poet. With the view of all these features, Emily Dickinson is known for giving a new dimension to the genre of poetry and brought unexpected changes in the field of poetry by breaking the traditional rule of writing poetry. Her poems are the treasure of images. She takes the reader into the world of imagination on the vehicle of imageries. She approaches language like an explorer of new worlds. She has decorated the poems by using various figures of speech. All these ingredients help her to establish the most eminent poetess in the history of American Literature.
