Abstract :
This paper is an attempt to examine the role of information literacy programmes in India which were conducted at national level by the Govt. of India. The information literacy has become a vital process in modern changing world and Information technology is also taking new shape day by day. The need of hours is to enable the citizens to interpret and make informed choice as user of information sources. Information literacy makes the person capable to recognize when information is needed and how to locate, evaluate, and use effectively of the needed information. In this regarding the government of India has conducted a numbers of programmes in the realm of information literacy. These programmes are- Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, District Primary Education Programme, Computer Based Functional Literacy, and National Literacy Mission. In the year of 2005 the government of India passed an Act which is known as RTI Act-2005 which enables the citizens to receive the vital information from the common people government and non government organizations. India is no one nation in the space technology and also become a power house in information technology. The information has become vital to make the people aware of the information technology.
